The USGA's overall distance standard for carry and roll has increased several times since 1975 alone. It is now 315 yards, up from 305 just a few years back. Technology has allowed for higher swing speeds and more foregiveness also, however, we must remember, it took all of that to finally break the 60 year old scoring record on the TOUR.Anonymous[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347482.post-1157406408320835432006-09-04T14:46:00.000-07:002006-09-04T14:46:00.000-07:002006-09-04T14:46:00.000-07:00I don't think the old-time golfers with their old ...I don't think the old-time golfers with their old time equipment would stand a chance on todays tight and long courses. I'd say it's a wash -- golfers are the same today as before, no better and no worse. Oddly, courses have been adapted to the new equipment. (Or not so oddly, as there is tons of money to be made by continuously altering and improving the equipment -- though that has maxed-out about now, by the USGA clamping down.) But I would like to know where Tommy gets his Titelist balata 100 balls! My father used to play with those, 40+ years ago! "Hey Tommy, yo! Where did you say you buy those Titlist balata 100's?"Anonymous[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347482.post-1112026101172588122005-03-28T08:08:00.000-08:002005-03-28T08:08:00.000-08:002005-03-28T08:08:00.000-08:00I think the biggest difference isthat the balls to...I think the biggest difference is<BR/>that the balls today fly higher and stright. It is's hard to make <BR/>the ball hook or fade on demand then with the old balls. Outside of a few new putters and a "L" wedge I play the same clubs I used in highschool and college in the last 80s. I also still play a 100 compression Titleist balata. You are 100 percent right. Gold balls have gotten to the point you get (almost) the feel/spin of a balata and the distance of a two-piece. I can hit a top-flight 25-30 yeard farther then a balata ball. I would argue you still don't have the spin from 50 or so yards in. Plus, at least for me, if I am on fast greens, a "real" balata still has a lot more feel.Tommyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05304375069990216756[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347482.post-1111257284231104812005-03-19T10:34:00.001-08:002005-03-19T10:34:00.001-08:002005-03-19T10:34:00.001-08:00Well, to us 50= handicappers spin is just some thi...Well, to us 50= handicappers spin is just some thign that happens like the weather and distance comes and goesAnonymous[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347482.post-1111257248624313382005-03-19T10:34:00.000-08:002005-03-19T10:34:00.000-08:002005-03-19T10:34:00.000-08:00Well, to us 50= handicappers spin is just some thi...Well, to us 50= handicappers spin is just some thign that happens like the weather and distance comes and goesAnonymous[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347482.post-1111084279590728672005-03-17T10:31:00.000-08:002005-03-17T10:31:00.000-08:002005-03-17T10:31:00.000-08:00As someone who has never cared nor found golf very...As someone who has never cared nor found golf very interesting I have to say that this one simple post has turned that a bit around.
